Advantages and disadvantages of floating head and U-tube heat exchangers

Time2024-06-07

A floating head heat exchanger is a type of shell and tube heat exchanger, where one end of the tube sheet is not connected to the shell, allowing for free axial movement, also known as a floating head. The floating head consists of a floating tube sheet, hook ring, and floating head end cover, and is a detachable connection, allowing the tube bundle to be extracted from the shell.

Floating head typeHeat exchangerAdvantages of floating head type:

◆ If there is a temperature difference between the heat exchange tube and the shell, i.e., when the shell or heat exchange tube expands, thermal stress will not occur;

◆ The tube bundle can be extracted from the shell, facilitating cleaning inside and between the tubes.

Disadvantages of floating head heat exchangers:

◆ The structure is relatively complex, requires a large amount of material, and has a high cost;

◆ If the seal between the floating head cover and the floating tube sheet is not tight, internal leakage may occur, causing mixing of the two media.

U-tube heat exchanger

U-shaped tube heat exchangerIt is a type of shell and tube heat exchanger, consisting of components such as tube sheets, shells, and tube bundles. Each tube of the U-tube heat exchanger is bent into a U shape, with the inlet and outlet installed on both sides of the same tube sheet. The end caps are divided into two chambers by a partition, allowing each tube to expand and contract freely, independent of other tubes and the shell.

Advantages of U-tube heat exchangers:

◆ The tube bundle can float freely, without considering thermal stress, suitable for large temperature difference applications;

◆ It has only one tube sheet, fewer flanges, fewer leakage points, and a simple structure;

◆ U-tube heat exchangers operate reliably and have a low cost.

Disadvantages of U-tube heat exchangers:

◆ Cleaning inside the tubes is relatively difficult. Due to the need for a certain bending radius, the utilization rate of the tube sheet is low;

◆ The spacing between the innermost tubes is large, making the shell side prone to short-circuiting. When the flow rate inside the tubes is too high, it can cause severe erosion of the U-bend section, affecting its service life;

◆ If the inner tube is damaged, it cannot be replaced, resulting in a higher scrap rate.
