Characteristics of the new DMF composite solvent refining process technology and equipment in Hubei chemical machinery

Characteristics of the new DMF composite solvent refining process technology and equipment

  1. Low investment:

Due to the corrosiveness of the solvent itself, the requirements for equipment materials in furfural refining are relatively high, with some equipment needing to use stainless steel, increasing the initial investment. NMP is more corrosive than furfural, requiring even more stainless steel equipment, leading to a relatively larger investment. The new composite solvent has low corrosiveness, and most of the equipment in the system can use ordinary carbon steel, reducing the total investment by about 30%.

  2. Low operating costs:

The solubility and selectivity of the new composite solvent are superior to those of furfural, so to achieve the same product quality, the oil-to-agent ratio used by the new composite solvent is very low, reducing the recovery system's dependence on fuel, thus significantly lowering costs. Generally, for the same scale, processing costs are 30-50% lower than those of furfural. NMP has a high boiling point, so the recovery system requires higher heating temperatures, resulting in a larger fuel requirement and increased costs.

  3. High refined oil yield:

Composite solvents have better selectivity than single solvents, resulting in higher refined oil yields. The refined oil yield (the percentage of product to raw material) for composite solvent refining reaches 90-91%, while furfural refining generally reaches 89-90%. The refined oil yield of composite solvent refining is 1-2% higher than that of furfural refining, which alone can generate an additional income of 2 million yuan per year for a 100,000-ton plant.

  4. Good product quality

The color of the refined oil is 0.5 shades lighter than that of furfural refined oil, the viscosity of the oil increases by more than 10, and the oxidation stability improves by more than 20 minutes (according to laboratory methods).

  5. Long operating cycle of the device

Due to the characteristics of the solvent itself, furfural solvents have thermal instability and are not resistant to acid and alkali, often leading to coking and clogging of pipelines, resulting in frequent shutdowns for maintenance. The new composite solvent does not coke, and the operating cycle is longer than that of furfural, reaching over a year. NMP generates nitrogen oxides upon hydrolysis, which, when encountering water, forms nitrous acid, making it quite corrosive; using carbon steel equipment will lead to rapid corrosion.

  6. Low solvent price and wide availability:

Every plant has solvent losses, and the same loss (generally calculated based on solvent loss per ton of raw material, in kilograms) can be, for example, 3 kg/ton of raw material. With a low solvent price, processing costs are also low. NMP is more expensive, followed by furfural, while the new composite solvent is even cheaper. The price of the new composite solvent is around 6000 yuan per ton, while the unit prices of furfural and NMP are both around 16000 yuan.

  7. Mature process technology and stable operation:

This process belongs to new technology and has already been industrialized. The first set of 200,000-ton equipment was put into production in October 2014, the second set of 80,000-ton equipment in December 2016, and the third set of 100,000-ton equipment in July 2017, all located in Shandong Province. Currently, two 100,000-ton waste oil regeneration projects are under construction in Hubei and Guangdong, both equipped with new composite solvent refining devices.

  8. Automatic control system:

The Zhejiang University Central Control DCS control system is used, with a high degree of automation, clear logical relationships between equipment, and accurate traceable data.
