Methods for Corrosion Prevention in Storage Tanks

1. What are the methods for corrosion prevention of storage tanks?

Storage tank manufacturersCorrosion prevention treatment must be done well, especially for underground storage tanks. If corrosion occurs due to inadequate corrosion prevention, it can lead to significant losses.

There are mainly two methods for corrosion prevention of storage tanks:

1. Structural modification method. This corrosion prevention method mainly involves manufacturing different types of corrosion-resistant alloys, such as adding nickel, chromium, etc. to ordinary steel to make stainless steel, utilizing the properties of stainless steel for corrosion prevention.

2. Protective layer method. This method is a more traditional corrosion prevention method, which involves covering a protective layer on the metal surface to isolate the metal products from surrounding corrosive media, thereby preventing corrosion. Common methods include applying petroleum jelly, machine oil, paint, or covering with enamel, plastic, and other corrosion-resistant non-metallic materials on the surface of the storage tank; or using hot-dip, electroplating, spraying, and other methods to coat a layer of metal that is not easily corroded on the surface of steel.

2. Corrosion prevention construction plan for the inner wall of the storage tank

The inner wall of the storage tank may retain some oil and gas components, making it more susceptible to corrosion and potential safety hazards. Therefore, more attention should be paid to corrosion prevention treatment. The corrosion prevention construction plan for the inner wall of the storage tank is as follows:

1. Empty the air inside the tank. Before the corrosion prevention construction of the inner wall of the storage tank, the oil and gas inside the tank should be emptied. Generally, circulating air and tank water are used to clean the oil and gas inside the tank. Although circulating air cleaning takes a long time and is less efficient, it is relatively practical; tank water cleaning is only suitable for small-volume tanks and is not very applicable for large volumes. It is important to ensure that the exhaust meets technical requirements, as this relates to construction safety and effectiveness.

 2. Cleaning the inner wall of the storage tank. The cleaning of the inner wall for corrosion prevention is usually done by sandblasting, and there are cases where polishing machines are used (due to the need to clean oil stains and remove paint before polishing, it is generally not recommended). It is recommended to use a water sandblasting machine, which combines water jet and sandblasting technologies, possessing the environmental and explosion-proof characteristics of water jets and the superior rust removal and paint stripping effects of sandblasting, making it very suitable for flammable and explosive environments, especially for corrosion prevention operations during the normal operation of oil storage tanks.

 3. Spraying paint on the inner wall of the storage tank. Use specialized spraying equipment to spray anti-corrosion paint on the inner wall of the storage tank. In addition to ensuring safety during spraying, attention should also be paid to the working intervals of the construction personnel to ensure they can timely breathe fresh air outside the tank.
