Heat exchangers are energy-saving devices that achieve heat transfer between two or more fluids at different temperatures. They are essential for large-scale heating.

According toheat exchanger manufacturersthe heat transfer methods, heat exchangers can be divided into three main categories:

Direct contact heat exchangers, also known as mixed heat exchangers, are devices where hot and cold fluids come into direct contact and exchange heat. Typically, the two fluids in direct contact are gas and a low-pressure vaporizing liquid;

Storage heat exchangerswork on the principle of utilizing the thermal conductivity of solid materials. Specifically, the hot medium first heats the solid material to a certain temperature, and the cold medium then obtains heat from the solid material, achieving heat transfer through this process;

Wall-type heat exchangers, also utilize the thermal conduction of a medium, where the cold and hot media are separated by a solid wall, and heat exchange occurs through the wall. For heating companies, wall-type heat exchangers are the most widely used. Depending on the structure, they can also be classified into tubular heat exchangers, plate heat exchangers, and heat pipe heat exchangers.

01. Shell and tube heat exchangers

       Shell and tube heat exchangersare also known as tube bundle heat exchangers. They use the wall surface of the tube bundle enclosed in a shell as the heat transfer surface. This type of heat exchanger has a relatively simple structure, reliable operation, can be made from various structural materials (mainly metals), and can be used at high temperatures and pressures, making it the most widely used type today. Depending on the compensation measures adopted, shell and tube heat exchangers can be divided into four types: fixed tube sheet heat exchangers, floating head heat exchangers, U-tube heat exchangers, and packing box heat exchangers.

02. Fixed tube sheet heat exchangers

       Fixed tube sheet heat exchangersare a type of shell and tube heat exchanger. The tube sheets at both ends of the fixed tube sheet heat exchanger are connected to the shell by welding and mainly consist of the shell, tube sheets, tube bundle, and top cover (end cap).

The advantages of fixed tube sheet heat exchangers are:

◆ Simple structure;

◆ Maximum number of tubes and minimum bypass within the same shell diameter;

◆ Each heat exchange tube can be replaced, and cleaning inside the tubes is convenient.

The disadvantages of fixed tube sheet heat exchangers are:

◆ The shell side cannot be mechanically cleaned;

◆ When the temperature difference between the heat exchange tubes and the shell is large (greater than 50°C), thermal stress occurs. The solution is to set an expansion joint on the shell, thus limiting the shell side pressure due to the strength of the expansion joint;

◆ Only suitable for clean fluids that are not prone to scaling, in working conditions where the temperature difference between the two fluids is not large or is large but the shell side pressure is not high.
