Liquid ammonia has dangerous characteristics such as flammability, explosiveness, and toxicity, and is classified as a hazardous chemical. Liquid ammonia storage tanks are used for large-scale storage of liquid ammonia, so safety must be prioritized. The following aspects should be noted for the storage of liquid ammonia:
1. Equipment safety: If the design, inspection, and maintenance of the liquid ammonia storage tank are lacking or inadequate, or if safety accessories such as level gauges, pressure gauges, and safety valves have defects or hidden dangers, it may lead to tank leakage accidents, so inspections are essential.
2. Safety of the operating environment: In summer or high temperatures, liquid ammonia storage tanks should be equipped with sunshades, fixed cooling spray systems, and other preventive facilities as required to avoid overpressure leaks.
3. Storage volume safety: If the storage volume of the liquid ammonia tank exceeds 85% of the tank capacity, or if the pressure exceeds the control indicators, or if the liquid ammonia is transferred without strictly following the prescribed procedures and steps, overpressure leakage and explosion accidents may occur.
4. Liquid ammonia filling safety: When filling liquid ammonia, it should be done according to regulations to avoid overfilling, which could lead to the rupture of filling pipelines and cause accidents.
5. Ammonia liquid level control safety: If the ammonia release speed is too fast, the liquid level control is too low, or other instrument control failures occur, it may cause high-pressure gas to enter the liquid ammonia storage tank, leading to overpressure, significant ammonia leakage, and serious hazards. Therefore, controlling the ammonia liquid level is crucial.
6. Safety facility setup: Set up lightning protection and anti-static facilities as required, and conduct regular inspections. Damaged or ineffective facilities should be replaced promptly, and attention should be paid to setting up production process alarms, interlocks, emergency pressure relief, and combustible toxic gas alarms.
